San Carlos Apache Catholic Community: St. Charles School – Better Way Foundation
San Carlos Apache Catholic Community: St. Charles School – San Carlos, AZ
St. Charles School, located on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation was opened in September 1965. The first generation Catholics who attended St. John’s Indian Boarding School requested that a Catholic school be built on the reservation so that their children and subsequent generations would have the opportunity to learn about the Catholic faith without leaving the reservation and losing their Apache culture.
Today 130 students are taught by Sisters of Mercy and lay teachers. Many former students speak with appreciation of the spiritual and academic training they received at St. Charles School. Many St. Charles students go on to attend college and hold responsible positions in the tribe. Alumni send their children to St. Charles continuing the hope and aspiration of those early faith-filled Catholics.
Better Way Foundation funding supports the Teach Them program, an Apache language curriculum for all K – 6 students.
