Gimiwan (Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe) is an Ojibwe language educator and nonprofit leader from Cass Lake, Minn. A veteran immersion teacher, he taught k-1 at Nigaane in Leech Lake and grades 3-5 at Waadookodaading Ojibwe Language Institute in Lac Courte Oreilles. Over the past decade, he has supported Ojibwe immersion programs across the Midwest with curriculum, materials, and staff development.
Gimiwan is the Executive Director and Founder of the Midwest Indigenous Immersion Network, a nonprofit that connects and supports Ojibwe language educators through collaboration and shared resources. As a 2021 Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellow, he used his fellowship to formalize MIIN, develop its online resource repository, and strengthen partnerships among 11 Ojibwe communities. He also serves as a subject matter expert for Rosetta Stone Ojibwa.
